Aliases are essential for speeding up CAD drafting. In this article, we’ll explain what aliases are and provide a convenient list of commonly used aliases.
Since this list is tailored for AutoCAD, be sure to check it out until the end.
An alias is a shortcut that allows you to run a command by entering the first letter (or the first two letters) of the command. (There are some exceptions.)
Because the input is shorter, it helps increase speed and significantly reduces drafting time.
For example, to draw a line, you would normally type LINE + Enter in the command line. However, since the line command already has a predefined alias, you can simply type L + Enter to launch it.

Alongside aliases, you should also learn shortcut keys.
In addition to common shortcuts used in everyday PC work—like Ctrl + Z to undo—AutoCAD assigns many useful shortcuts to function keys and more.

We’ve compiled 37 shortcuts that drafters frequently use. Feel free to use this list as a reference. For commands that have dedicated articles, you can jump to them directly via the links.

Most people use the mouse with their right hand and the keyboard with their left. But reaching the Enter key with your left hand can be a bit awkward…
In that case, try using the Spacebar instead of Enter. It’s much easier to press. Just note that when your keyboard is in full-width input mode, the Spacebar won’t work as Enter. Be sure to use half-width input when substituting Space for Enter.

To edit aliases, go to:
Manage Tab > Customization Panel > “Edit Aliases”.
You can change, for example, “C + Enter → CIRCLE command” to “C + Enter → COPY command.”
You can also add frequently used commands. Try customizing aliases to make your workflow even smoother.
